Spoken Frame Media’s Wisconsin Film Festival Short Documentary

Back in April, a Spoken Frame Media original film premiered at the Wisconsin Film Festival.

“Expiration Dates” is a short documentary that showcases how the deceased are remembered, the people who remember them, and the beautiful balance between morbidity and humor that comes with old age.

I took inspiration from my grandparents, Bumpa and Nana (the stars of the film).

Since the 1950s, Bumpa has been saving obituaries of people he knows - a collection that now spans 12 binders. Paired with Nana’s history of doing hair on the deceased, their sentiments on death made for a fascinating story.

To bring this film together, we recorded interviews, captured amazing drone shots with freshly fallen snow, and got permission to film in the local funeral home’s visitation area.

We completed the project by the festival’s deadline last December and were accepted.

Wesley Morgan Director's Cut

Before the premiere, I was invited onto Director’s Cut - a PBS Wisconsin show that features an annual episode on the Wisconsin Film Festival.

For those who enjoy some behind-the-scenes commentary, you can watch the Director’s Cut interview here (37:50)

On April 15th, The film premiered at the Chazen Art Museum alongside other short documentaries and was attended by the stars themselves.
