Tips for Being Interviewed On Camera

Many people we work with have little or no experience being interviewed on camera, so I want to share a few tips that will help you prepare and feel confident for your interview. You don’t have to be an expert; our goal is simply to make the conversation feel natural.

1. Repeat the interviews question

For example, if you’re asking “How was your experience with Dr. Anderson?” begin your answer with “My experience with Dr. Anderson was . . .” By giving this context to your responses your interview can be edited so your answer can stand on its own.

2. Make eye contact with the interviewer (not the camera lens!)

During the film shoot, there will be lights and cameras set up around you. This can sometimes feel intimidating or distracting, but it’s important to keep your eyes on the interviewer rather than looking directly into the lens. Even though your eyes may wander away from the interviewer at points, try to keep in mind that staring down the camera is off-limits.

3. Relax

Remember that our goal is to capture natural responses, and we want you to bring your authentic self to the interview. Focus on the person asking the questions and pretend you're just having a conversation with them. Let us know if there is anything you need to feel comfortable during the shoot.

4. Don’t worry about mistakes!

They will happen and it’s okay. The video will be edited down significantly. Sometimes we’ll film a 30-minute interview for a final 3-minute video. Typically, we’ll shoot with two camera angles which also makes it easier to edit around hiccups. When you do make a mistake, you can always pause and start the sentence over again. Remember, you don’t have to be a professional -- our job is to make you look good!
